Candle making process

Candles in containers are popular throughout the year. They sell from Mother’s Day to Easter, Halloween, and all through the festive season. If you’re selling candles, candles in containers are always going to be a big part of your stock selection. If this is your first exploration of the candle community, we’re here to help. In this guide, we’ll explain how to create beautiful container candles your customers will adore.

The first step? Choosing the perfect candle tins for your products.

1. Select the Perfect Candle Tins for Your Creations

Choosing the right candle tins is vital for both aesthetics and functionality. Consider the size, shape, and material of the tins. Metal tins are a popular choice due to their durability and heat resistance. They also come in various finishes, including matte, glossy, and metallic, allowing you to personalise your creation.

Think about your target audience and the purpose of your candle. For instance, smaller tins are ideal for travel candles, while larger tins can be used for home décor. Ensure the tins have a secure lid to keep the fragrance intact and provide a polished, complete, appearance.

2. Prepare Your Workspace

Creating a clean and organised workspace is essential for a smooth candle-making process. Lay down protective sheets to catch any spills and ensure all your tools and materials are within easy reach. Good ventilation is also important, especially when working with fragrances and hot wax.

Having a dedicated area for each step of the process will help you stay organised. Keep your melting equipment, fragrances, and tins in separate zones to streamline the workflow.

3. Purchase The Right Equipment

Before you begin, gather all necessary items and equipment. You will need candle tins, wax (such as soy, paraffin, or beeswax), a double boiler or a melting pot, wicks, fragrance oils, a thermometer, and a stirring utensil.

Additional items include wick holders to keep the wick centred, a heat-resistant surface to place your tins on, and labels if you plan to add them to your finished candles. Ensuring you have all these items ready will make the process more efficient and enjoyable.

4. Melt your candle tin wax

Begin by melting your chosen wax in a double boiler or a melting pot, using a thermometer to monitor the temperature. Each type of wax has a specific melting point, so be sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines. Stir the wax occasionally to ensure even melting.

Once the wax has reached the desired temperature, remove it from the heat source. This is the perfect time to prepare your candle tins by securing the wicks in place using wick holders or adhesive stickers.

5. Add your fragrance

Adding fragrance to your candles is where creativity truly shines. Once the wax has cooled slightly but is still in a liquid state, add your chosen fragrance oil. The recommended amount is usually 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax, but always check the specific guidelines for your fragrance oil.

Stir the mixture gently to ensure the fragrance is evenly distributed. Be mindful not to create air bubbles, as they can affect the candle's appearance and burning quality. Remember, customer fragrance mixes unique to your business are a great way to guarantee that your company stands out from the rest. It can also help you build up brand loyalty for your business.

6. Cure your candle and trim the wick

Pour the fragranced wax carefully into your prepared candle tins, leaving a small gap at the top. Allow the candles to cool and set completely, which can take several hours overnight, depending on the size of the tin and the type of wax used.
Once fully cured, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This ensures a clean and even burn. Your beautiful container candles are now ready to sell. Remember, patience and attention to detail at each step will result in a stunning final product.
