The Cosy Cottage
The Cosy Cottage story began in 2017 with Clara producing three fragrances of natural, handmade soap in her kitchen laboratory of a 350 year old cottage in North Yorkshire. Clara's initial motivation was her rising concern about the harmful effects of artificial detergents, preservatives and other additives found in commercially produced skincare products, alongside the catastrophic impact of microplastics both in the eco-system and human body. Using her knowledge as a qualified chemist and associate of the Royal College of Science, Clara began producing a range of personal care products free from sulphates, artificial surfactants, parabens, palm oil and plastics. The ethos of using science to develop effective, natural, gentle products which work with the body rather than fighting against its natural processes continues to shape Cosy Cottage today.
As the company has expanded both its retail and its trade connections, the team has expanded too. Clara's husband Philip, her son and her daughter now all work in the business and other friends and family members regularly join her and the team, in the labs and workshops. In Clara's spare time, she runs creative writing retreats in Yorkshire and Europe with novelist and Poet Janet Dean, through their joint venture, Awakening the Writer Within.
In 2019, Cosy Cottage selected the North Yorkshire market town of Malton as the base for its expanding manufacturing operations, opening its first store in Malton in 2020 and flagship store and holistic treatment venue in 2024.

The company is eager to achieve the goal of improving levels of sustainability. This led to an increased need to be transparent and showcase their product range as truly authentic and relevant. Particularly as more of their competitors became involved in 'greenwashing.' .
